<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<************** AniPaint **************>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
AniPaint 5.1 copyright (c) 1994 Rick Sobie
Thank You for choosing AniPaint.
If you use it you are legally, morally and ethically obligated
to pay for it. It is not free. AniPaint is protected by International
Copyright Law. It is not to be used by any Corporation, business,
gov't or other agency until a site license has been negotiated.
To register run CONFIGIT.
Minimum 286 with VGA Adapter and mouse required.
There are over 135 graphic tools, some with multiple processes.
The most difficult part is figuring out which mouse button does
what and at which particular moment. That is primarily why reading
the documentation or at least having it handy is so important. The file
C:\ANIPAINT\STUDIO.DOC contains the tool use instructions. Run the demos
in the program to get a fast start. Load files in the Screening Room by
clicking Mouse Button 2 on the filename as it appears in the directory area.
Load the example workspace file EXAMP256.CFG using the Load button.
You will find standard conventional key useage such as ALT-X to exit or
ESC to cancel.
The basic theory regarding this program is:
It is designed to work best with a reasonably fast modern machine.
It works best with a ramdrive. You may define the drive you would like
to use for temporary files. Run Configit and select
the options menu, then select a drive to be used as your ramdrive.
(A ramdrive is an imitation disk created in memory by DOS, see your
DOS manual)
Example:
If you have extra memory you create a ramdrive. The next
available drive letter is lets say D:. So you create a 4 meg
ramdrive on D:. Now when you use the program, it creates files
on that drive. They are allocated to memory, yet you can browse
through them and access them like a harddrive. You may have
one or two pictures, some text, a few clips that you have captured,
maybe a temporary palette or two and a couple of animation sequences
all active in memory. They all remain organized and in the same
format as they would be if they were on your harddrive. In fact
if you don't supply a ramdrive, they will be put on your harddrive.
The benefit is that while these files are in active memory on your
ramdrive, you can access them faster. This allows the program to
operate faster, and allows your animation to run faster.
Keep in mind though, that when you use a ramdrive, it disappears
when you reboot or shut off your system. Therefore, you should
use the Save option in the program to save your work to your
harddrive before you shut off your system. You will be
prompted for automatic backup on exit.
!Important! If you run out of space on your ramdrive you are better
to disable it instead, rather than struggle along on minimum space.
You will get the error File Not Found amongst others if space is
unavailable. A 1 meg ramdrive is only practical in 320x200 mode.
You may load, edit or create images in bitmap form (eg:PCX picture
made with a scanner or another paint program etc.) or you
may load, edit or create a vector line drawing(eg: house plans,
architectural drawings, maps etc. AniPaint format only).
Once you have a picture you can animate part or all of it using
several methods geared for computers of varying speeds.
The program is designed for a maximum of 256 colors on screen at
any one time. The best use of these 256 colors in this program
is with a scaled or partially scaled palette. (the color number
gets higher as the shades of one color get brighter)
Using this type of palette will give the best results with many of
the tools. Any tool which is gradient in nature requires a scaled
or partially scaled palette.
This program requires a mouse. It also creates it's own cursors.
It hides the usual arrow. If you see the white standard graphics
arrow during use of this program, your pointing device is not
completely compatible with AniPaint.
see FILEINFO.DOC in CONFIGIT.
If you have not done so already, I suggest you print the manual in the
Documents Menu of CONFIGIT. It is approx. 110 pages in length. I used the
DOS command "COPY filename.ext PRN" so it should print on any printer.
It is formatted for a 66 line page with a 6 line header and a 6 line
footer.
Important! Keep your unregistered, original, complete, compressed, copy,
of this release as a backup and for giving away. If registered, put
your registration number in a safe place. (Under your monitor is good.)
This program works in modes from 320x200 to 1200x1024 in 16 or 256 colors.
Complete Documentation, Demonstrations and Help are included to
make the learning process as easy as possible.
There are many exciting features and over a 135 tools for you to
explore, but the most exciting part of all is the natural talent you bring
to the program and how you find new and creative ways to use it.
To begin, use CONFIGIT to make sure your machine's graphic adapter is
compatible, and your mouse is set to the correct delay.
When you are finished type ANIPAINT at DOS to load the program. If you are
using Microsoft Windows use ANIPAINT.PIF and the ANIPAINT.ICO Icon in
the ANIPAINT Directory. If you have a slow machine that uses the 16 color
drivers you may find the program runs faster from DOS.
Please Give Unregistered copies of AniPaint to your friends. Once Anipaint
is registered ,only give your original compressed copy, or use the Option,
"Pack for Giving" in CONFIGIT.EXE. It makes the job easy and the program
will work when it get's there. Otherwise it will not.
Unregistered copies may be given providing they are in their original form.
Let me explain why.
Example: Joe Florentino From Moosejaw is an interior decorator
that loves the color purple. So he converts all
his menu palettes to these lovely shades of purple.
He uploads the program onto his favourite BBS and
when people download it they say "What ugly color."
This is only one example. What if you don't include the drivers, or forget
to include the Documentation? Simply put, AniPaint protects it's copyright
and it's integrity and will check to make sure everything is intact or it
will not work. It will merely state that it is a corrupted copy and then
exit.
Optimizing your System for AniPaint
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A good system would be a 486 66Mhz with 8 meg of RAM, an SVGA Monitor with
a VESA compatible display adapter with 1 meg of on-board memory.
AniPaint does not require Extended or Expanded memory but it's operation is
enhanced. A minimum 286 CPU is required. Anything less is too slow.
Your math coprocessor will be used if one exists.
If Expanded memory (EMS) is available AniPaint will automatically load the
program itself into it and run from there. (approx. 600 k needed,
autodetected at runtime - LIM standard).
To optimize your system:
Free as much conventional memory as possible by loading DOS HIGH etc. Some
options are affected if conventional memory is of short supply.
Create a Ramdrive or Virtual Disk if you have enough Extended (XMS) or an
excess of Expanded Memory.
The optimum size of ramdisk would be 4 meg. More if you work with large
screen modes or large pictures.
Why a Ramdrive? It provides a user friendly way for you to access your
extended or expanded memory like any other disk drive. You
will be prompted to backup D: C:\_DBACKUP prior to exit. A ramdrive or
virtual disk is temporary and disappears when you shut off your system.
Use the Load Button to restore the files in C:\_DBACKUP to D:.
A ramdrive will generally speed this program up considerably.
(If you are using a drive other than D: as your ramdrive, simply
choose that drive letter in CONFIGIT.)
If you only have 1 meg of extra EMS or XMS try either:
A Ramdrive - no extra EMS for overlay so it will run from disk, temp files
will be put on D: until D: is full, then will switch to C:. or
Convert XMS to EMS - Program will run in EMS, will use C: for temp files.
(See your DOS Manual on EMM386.SYS and SMARTDRV.SYS);
or
Use EMS - same as XMS to EMS above.
Use whichever gives the best performance on your machine.
Microsoft Windows can create EMS from your Hard Disk C:. It will
however lessen your free space on C: so make plenty of space available.
SMARTDRV.SYS Disk Swapping sometimes slows this program's performance
and sometimes speeds this program's performance. You decide.
Make as much space on drive C: available as possible. 10 to 20 meg would be
optimum. The program will not operate correctly if drive C: becomes full.
AniPaint uses your hardrive as a virtual disk when D: becomes full or when
D: is not available.
You cannot run AniPaint from floppies.
Only use resolutions that you know are O.K. to use with your monitor. See
your monitor documentation.
Autodetection does not detect the IBM8514.
Autodetection defaults to 640x480 16 color VGA mode.
Read DRIVERS.DOC for help with drivers.
AniPaint may conflict with memory resident programs. Trial and error is the
only way to find out. If the system locks up, reboot and "rem" them out.
You may want to create a batch file that uses one copy of CONFIG.SYS and
AUTOEXEC.BAT for AniPaint. See your DOS manual.
16 Color modes may work slightly faster from DOS rather than Microsoft
Windows, although you may be able to task switch using 16 modes.
( you may not be able to display AniPaint in 256 color mode,
in a Microsoft Window)
Use the FULL SCREEN option in the Paint Studio when in 320x200 mode.
Always use CONFIGIT.EXE to move, give, or configure AniPaint or it will not
function correctly. Set the mouse, set the driver, and set the user
definable options. They are preset to the optimum default settings and may
be reinitialized by choosing Default 256 or Default 16.
Test the driver first using the drivers menu from the Main Menu before you
save the settings.(IBM8514, ATT400, excluded, they are
entered by switch on the command line.) see help in Drivers Menu in
CONFIGIT. (Set it at Autodetection for IBM8514 and ATT400,
then use the commandline switch.)
Use the Window Cursor instead of the Ball Cursor in the Screening Room, if
you have a slow machine. Run CONFIGIT.
For best picture quality when loading PCX files, use the 256 color modes.
When working on photographic quality PCX, greyscale for best editing
results.
Older PCX files or 16 color or less, are converted to 2 colors with a 256
color palette. In 16 color mode, only the first 16 palette color entries
are visible.
Use the tools on images in a zoomed out state for best results.
If you have a machine with a CPU speed of less than 50 Mhz, see Speeding up
the Program at the end of SCREENRM.DOC.
See your DOS manual on Optimizing your System for more info.
Remember! Use CONFIGIT to install and configure the program correctly.
(Type CONFIGIT at DOS in the ANIPAINT directory, where CONFIGIT.EXE should
be.)
Important !! This program requires command.com to be in the root directory
C:\
If it is not, it will not operate correctly.
C:\ANIPAINT should be in your PATH in AUTOEXEC.BAT
if not AniPaint may have trouble finding files. see DOS manual
on the PATH command.
You need the line FILES=30 in your CONFIG.SYS. This tells
DOS how many files can be open at the same time. In some situations
you may need to increase this number. (see your DOS Manual)
Microsoft Windows Users:
If you intend to run AniPaint from Windows, you may use the
Icons supplied. There is one for the program, ANIPAINT.ICO,
and one for CONFIGIT ( the configuration utility for AniPaint),
ANICFGIT.ICO.
There is also a PIF file, ANIPAINT.PIF. Use this file as
the program startup file. It contains the optimum settings
for speed and best memory usage. Not all computers are the
same though, so if you are an experienced user, you may
want to check this file to ensure it is set correctly for
your system. AniPaint does not use Extended memory directly.
Convert it to EMS, and or use it for a RAMDRIVE.
It uses Expanded memory for it's overlay. The best use
of your Extended memory beyond 1 meg, is a ramdrive .
Test the program from DOS to see if it works faster
than when run from Windows. (not the Shell)
On some systems an increase in speed may be noticed. If you
are entering switches on the commandline, such as for an
alternate driver, you may want to add the switch in the
PIF file, or request you be prompted for the commandline
option. see your Windows documentation for information or
help in Windows on commandline options.
This is a DOS graphic application and you may not be able
to "display" it in a window. You will not be able to "run"
AniPaint in a window. They requires full screen
because of the way they use the palette.
You may run CONFIGIT in a Window but it works much better
full screen. CONFIGIT is a DOS text application.
There is no PIF file supplied for CONFIGIT . If you wish you may
use the PIF editor to create it. Choose the default settings.
( _DEFAULT.PIF )
You will find it very handy having the CONFIGIT Icon beside
the AniPaint Icon. In this way you can quickly switch drivers
or change the other options prior to loading AniPaint.
CONFIGIT to move or give AniPaint. It will not work otherwise.
=====================================================================
Here is the directory structure created by CONFIGIT
C:\ANIPAINT
DEMOS - | - HELPDOCS
/ | \
STAMPS OBJECTS CLIPS FONTS PALETTES
All are subdirectories of C:\ANIPAINT
DEMOS - Will contain the Demo Files
STAMPS - Contains the Clip Art
CLIPS - Your Clip Board Files will be put here if you use C:
(If a ramdrive is available ?:\CLIPS will be created)
OBJECTS - Sample Vector graphic PNT files
FONTS - Sample Fonts created by the program.
PALETTES - Menu and Sample Color Palettes created by the program
HELPDOCS - Help files and Documentation.
If you change this structure the program will not operate correctly.
All files should be left where they are put by CONFIGIT.
If you already have a Program called ANIPAINT on C:\ANIPAINT you had better
move it to avoid confusion. (unless you want AniPaint to write over the
files there.)
ANIPAINT needs the directory C:\ANIPAINT to operate. It is not necessary,
to have two copies of AniPaint active on your hard drive. AniPaint has a
"save workspace option". Just as a book can not be in two places at the
same time, either should active, registered copies of AniPaint.
AniPaint has been thouroughly tested, but with the myriad of platforms,
versions of DOS, Windows, mouse drivers etc., it is possible that some
incompatibility still exists.
If you find a serious problem (crashing, runtime errors etc..)
see FILEINFO.DOC
Important Notes for Uploading to BBS's!
=======================================
This program should be of valuable use for years to come.
However, BBS's are more and more insisting that files contained in the
program be less than 6 mos or so old. If you find that the BBS you
wish to upload this program to does not have AniPaint, but the age
of the files do not meet their requirements then you should
1) Contact the BBS below for a more current version.
or
2) Write me for a current version.
See CONFIGIT or AniPaint for address.
The most current version of AniPaint is always available on
EXEC-PC
The Largest BBS in the World
414-789-4360
(Membership Required, free limited access on first call).
Some BBS's restrict the size of the file. This program compressed is
over 800,000 bytes. You may have to make three separate archives in
order to upload it on some boards. A 2400 or 1200 baud modem cannot
download this file in the allotted time on-line.
eg:ANIPNT#1.ZIP ANIPNT#2.ZIP ANIPNT#3.ZIP
Important! If you do this, be sure to include "1 of 3" "2 of 3" and
"3 of 3" in the upload description.
You must always include the version number of the program.
This program represents many hours of hard work and is not free. If
you use it, you must pay for it.
